Overview

From reactive troubleshooting to creative innovation

The keynote speaker of our 8th International Lean Summit on 6 June will be Art Smalley, president of Art of Lean. He was one of the first Americans to work for Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan, first studying at different universities in Japan and then learning the principles of Toyota Production System (TPS) in the historic Kamigo engine plant where Taiichi Ohno was the founding plant manager. Art is the author of Toyota Kaizen Methodsand Shingo-prize winner books Creating Level Pull and Understanding A3 Thinking. His newest book Four Types of Problems was published in last September and will be launched in Hungarian during the Summit with the support of E.ON. Art’s pre-summit workshop and plenary speech will also focus on the four problem types and their solution methods. Our other foreign plenary speaker will be Oriol Cuatrecasas from LEI Spain who received great feedback last year, so we invited him back again to meet participants’ expectations.

Besides the plenary speeches, we will divide into practice-based sessions with maximum of 30 participants each. This means that in the 90-minute block before lunch break, there will be 8 parallel breakout sessions (2 in English) which will be repeated after lunch, so everyone will be able to attend 2 sessions. Art Smalley, OriolCuatrecasas, Audi, ELMŰ, Eurofins, Fehrer, GE Power, Praktiker, ShiwaForce and Tecnicathe ski booth manufacturer, each offers practical case studies in their respective time slot.

We can also hear a plenary speech from Dr. László Ábrahám General Manager of National Instruments and this year our out of the “lean box” guest will be Dr. Gábor Zacher.

On the 5th of June, the day before the event, a pre-summit workshop will be offered. This workshop will be around the Four Types of Problems by Art Smalley.

Four Types of Problems workshop
09:00 – 17:00

In this workshop we will cover some more detailed aspects of Art Smalley’s recent booked entitled Four Types of Problems. Most organizations or individuals are most familiar or comfortable with one or sometimes two styles of problems solving. While not wrong this approach often leads to frustrations and inadequate results.
The 20th century is full of various problems solving approaches. In this workshop we will highlight some of the more prominent ones and group them into four categories 1) Troubleshooting, 2) Gap from Standard, 3) Target State, and 4) Open Ended / Innovation. Each type will be reviewed at a high level and discussed in terms of similarities and differences overall. Then each type will be reviewed in greater detail, examples provided, and some type of group activity for discussion.

09:50 - 10:25 - 5 principles for fast and sustainable transformation

Often it can take a decade for an organization to develop and maintain capabilities that are necessary for a Lean transformation. These skills are basically related to problem-solving at different levels and the ability to reshape management systems and leadership behavior. This time is too long, especially with today’s pressing problems: perfect quality, flexibility, agile delivery and cost. Oriol will present the conclusions of an international research started in 2015.

15:40 - 16:15 - What is innovation?

Art Smalley in his new book refers to innovation as open-ended problem-solving. Innovation is also a popular topic in Hungary, but its exact definition is not widely known. Dr. László Ábrahám the board member of the Hungarian Innovation Alliance will help to clarify what motivates innovation, what can drive it and also demonstrates innovation and its pitfalls through practical examples.

Dr. Ábrahám, László - General Manager, National Instruments Hungary Kft.

16:15 - 16:50 - Out of the “lean box” – When the efficiency of problem solving is the question of life and death

Every year a unique feature of our program is a speaker who is at first sight far from lean, but after taking a closer look we can see a link to our topic. Antónia Mészáros sits down for a talk with Dr. Gábor Zacher about his experiences gained during his decades of working in emergency medical services and in the field of toxicology, reflecting on the different situations everyday problem solving brings. What decision-making mechanisms should be used in different emergency situations? How can you win the uphill battles against the ever-renewing designer drugs? What are the dangers of instant decision-making situations, and how can you avoid them, and educate about them?

Dr. Zacher, Gábor -doctor, toxicologist, associate professor
